15 A Family Visit

After they dropped the bachelorette party off at the hotel by Lake Hidavatu, the driver whisked the rest off to the last stop of the day. The hotel was farther away than Lana had expected, meaning their tour of the Geysir geothermal area was delayed by two hours. Still, it gave them enough time to see it all. The walk through the multitude of geysers and craters bubbling and boiling all over the place reminded her of the surface of the moon. The bleak nature of the place was even stranger, considering they were surrounded by rolling hills covered in grass and trees.

After a long day of hikes, Lana and Willow were ready to take a break once they got back to the hotel. However, when they entered the lobby, they walked straight into a catfight between Audrey and an older woman dressed in an expensive suit and high heels that were not at all appropriate for Iceland. From the expressions of astonishment on the faces of everyone in the lobby, the show had just begun.

“How did you find me?” Audrey cried.

“Your credit card’s transactions. That led me to the hotel in Reykjavik, and they told me you were on this tour.”

“You had no right—that’s my personal credit card!”

The older lady’s eyes narrowed. “I pay the bills, remember? I have the right to do whatever I want.”

“Not for long.” Audrey crossed her arms over her torso and smiled wickedly.

The woman’s face drained of color. “You didn’t …”

“Oh yes, I did. I warned you—if you tried to stand in my way, I would go around you.”

“But you are so young. If it is true love, then it won’t matter if you wait. He’s only rushing you into marriage so he can get his hands on your money. I bet it’s his father’s doing.”

“His family is rich—richer than I am.”

“No they aren’t—it’s all a lie, you silly girl! Gunnar is planning on using your fortunes to save his family’s business.”

What is she talking about? Lana wondered. After their first encounter with Gunnar, she had looked him up online and discovered that his family owned hundreds of retail locations across America, Canada, and Europe. They had just opened ten more locations in Oregon, alone. If the groom’s family owned one of the most successful sporting goods companies in the world, why would his family push him to marry for money?

Audrey looked at the woman as if she was a piece of dirt on her shoe. “Now you’re making up lies about his family? What is wrong with you, Maureen?”

Lana and Willow exchanged glances. “Aha! So this is the infamous aunt Maureen.”

“She’s certainly no pushover,” Lana whispered back.

Maureen continued lecturing her niece in a tone Lana would have used in a business meeting. There was no love or warmth in her voice or actions. “Their sporting goods stores are not as financially sound as they claim. Our accountant did a little digging and discovered that they’ve overextended themselves and the banks are about to call in several of their loans.
